At Zest for Prints, our story is rooted in resilience, community, and a passion for creativity. Let me share how it all began.

In 2010, I was working long hours for a printing company in Wakefield. When the business closed down, I was faced with the challenge of figuring out my next steps. My dad had always run his own business, and his entrepreneurial spirit inspired me to start fresh with my own printing company. With limited funds and big dreams, we found a small space in Meltham Mills—a former David Brown Tractors spray-painting shed.

For those who love local history, this site has a remarkable story. David Brown Tractors, founded in 1936, was a world-renowned company that played a pivotal role in World War II. The Meltham works produced thousands of airplane gears and tank transmissions and was even targeted by the Luftwaffe. Thanks to ingenious camouflage and decoy structures, the factory survived and contributed to the war effort.

When we moved into a little corner of this historic site, we discovered the unit had been flooded. It was quite the sight! But, with a lot of determination and a trusty water pump, we got the place ready, and Zest for Prints was born.

In our early days, I joined a local BNI group to network and grow the business. My first meeting was at 6 a.m. at an Italian restaurant in Huddersfield. From there, things snowballed, and 90% of our business came through referrals. It was an exciting, busy time—I was also starting a family then, so there was never a dull moment!

Seven years into running the business in “the shed,” planning permission was granted for housing on the site. That’s when Towndoor suggested moving to a bigger, better space. They showed me the old Myer’s Blacksmiths building, which Towndoor were renovating. It was pitch black inside, but I saw its potential immediately. The 2,800-square-foot space was perfect for our growing business. Since then, we’ve gone from strength to strength, and I can’t thank Dan and Towndoor enough for their support.

At Zest for Prints, community and relationships are everything. We’re proud to have an open-door policy—our customers often pop in for a brew and a chat. And don’t let the “Beware of Bruce” sign fool you; our friendly dogs are always wagging his tail and ready to greet visitors.

As I reflect on this journey, I believe in always pushing forward. The world keeps moving, and so should we. Try something new—it just might give you a fresh lease on life.
